Peter Dodds McCormick came to Australia from Glasgow in 1855, and worked for most of his life as a school teacher in Sydney. He composed over thirty patriotic and Scottish songs. The most famous of these was Advance Australia Fair, for which he was paid £100 in 1907 by the New South Wales Government, nearly thirty years after it was first performed. He died in 1916, just one year after registering copyright for his song.
