Montgomery is the latest author to join Running Press's ongoing ``Courage Classics'' series of budget hardcover reprints of classic works. Along with the full text, this edition includes excerpts from the author's journal. Also new in the line is Short Stories and Tall Tales by Mark Twain (

Gr 5-8-Anne never fit in at any of the foster homes she was sent to after her parents' deaths. When she is mistakenly sent to the Cuthbert's farmhouse, Green Gables, she is overjoyed. Although the foster parents wanted a boy, this mischievous, talkative, imaginative girl eventually gets under their skin. Kate Burton, an incredible vocal artist, provides superb narration for L. M. Montgomery's classic. She creates an irresistibly vivacious and breathless voice for Anne. She also provides an excellent voice for the repressed and proper Marilla Cuthbert, slowly allowing the woman's increasing affection for her charge to blossom. Shy Matthew Cuthbert is voiced quietly but firmly. Listeners will fall in love with Burton's performance as well as the spunky, exceptional Anne Shirley. A must-have for all libraries-B. Matthew and his sister wish to get a child - a boy, to help around the place and be of use. However, an error is made, and they end up with talkative little Ann, who'd rather have almost any name, and if they won't let her be a good name she'll settle for Anne with an e. However, the old siblings soon find that they love Anne, and that they don't want a boy when they can have accident prone Anne...

I loved this book, i could hardly put it down. What can i say, it's really a great read. i recommend it to mostly young girls, as i think this is the audience who would like it most, but some boys may enjoy it too. I'd rate it 10/10. I am definitley going to read the other series, just loved it. when i got to the end i cried it has real emotion in it!

Unlike the sequels, Anne of Green Gables is at least somewhat entertaining at times. Or, it is only somewhat dull at times, not excruciatingly dull. This is a problem for a lot of this sort of thing. Particularly when you try to stretch it out over multiple books, and change the focus from the kid that was the point of the thing to start with.

"Anne of Green Gables" isn't just a children's book. This story of an orphan who finds a home with an old spinster and bachelor is touching & often hilarious. Her wild imagination and noncomformist ways light up the little village of Avonlea, and its colourful residents give Anne what she's always dreamed of – a home, a family, and "kindred spirits."
