Benjamin Tonna (d. 2001) helped to start SEDOS, the study center of the missionary-sending institutes in Rome. He became its Executive Secretary in 1967 and, in that capacity, interviewed hundreds of missionaries as they passed through Rome or in their places of ministry in the cities of the Third World. His liaison responsibilities with the urban mission group of the World Council of Churches in Geneva helped him share with them the ecumenical dimension of the mission to the cities. He graduated with a degree in sociology from Louvain University and authored 'Sociologia della Pastorale', a handbook for the use of sociology in pastoral work. He served as parish priest of his native town of Rabat in the Republic of Malta as well as co-director with Brian P. Hall of the Omega Institute of the University of Santa Clara.
