When seventeen-year-old Valerie Russell discovers her boyfriend is secretly screwing her mother, her life falls apart. Betrayed and angry, she flees to New York City, where she takes up with a feral trio who have made their home in a network of abandoned subway tunnels. She finds their friendship eerily beguiling, as they drag her deeper into their damaged world. Impulsive Lolli talks of monsters in the subway and shoots up a shimmery amber-coloured powder that makes the shadows around her dance. Severe Luis claims he can make deals with creatures no one else can see. And then there is Dave, Luis's brother, who makes the mistake of letting Val tag along as he makes a delivery to a woman who turns out to have goat hooves instead of feet. For other exiles inhabit the hidden corners of the city -- isolated fey who have offended their Courts and been sentenced to live out their banishment surrounded by the stench of iron and steel. Ravus the troll is one such, and when Lolli unwisely steals from him, Val becomes bound to his service in recompense. But as he begins to unbend to her, she realises that beneath his embittered exterior there beats a lonely and vulnerable heart. And when an old enemy threatens him, and with him their fragile and blossoming relationship, Val's fierce certainty propels her beyond fear and into the dark depths of the Night Court -- where no price is too high for her to save him.

About the Author

Holly Black spent her early years in a decaying Victorian mansion where her mother fed her a steady diet of ghost stories and faerie tales. An avid collector of rare folklore volumes, spooky dolls, and crazy hats, she lives in West Long Branch, New Jersey, with her husband, Theo. Together with illustrator Tony DiTerlizzi, she is the creator of the bestselling Spiderwick Chronicles series of children's books.

Reviews

What makes Black's books so appealing to young adult readers is their well-balanced mix of reality (including a healthy dose of sex), high-concept fantasy and old-fashioned mystery. Raudman's expert reading of Black's second book in what the author calls the Faerie series catches that delicate blend very well, giving equal weight and credibility to characters who are definitely human (like heroine Valerie, her dismal school mates, her tacky family and the sad young derelicts she meets in the subway tunnels of New York) and those who are from another world entirely like the golden-eyed troll Ravus, who delivers a drug that heals faeries but kills the human runaways who steal it, looking for a way to improve their desperate condition. Raudman, whom listeners might recognize as several of the younger voices on The Simpsons, has a universally appealing voice likely to please hardcore fantasy fans and neophytes alike. Ages 14-up. Gr 9 Up-The author of Tithe (S & S, 2002) returns to her dark, dangerous, and amazing world of Faerie. When 17-year-old Valerie catches her boyfriend and her mother fooling around, she runs away to New York City. There she falls in with a small group of teens who live in the subway tunnels. But there is something more to their stories than that of normal street kids. When Valerie begins to notice odd things about the deliveries they make, and when she meets Ravus, a troll, she understands that there is an entire world that she has never known existed-the world of Faerie. Valerie and her friends begin to steal from Ravus's deliveries, using the Never that he provides to the faeries as a drug. But those who receive the deliveries are being found dead. Is Ravus the poisoner or could it be another of the fantastic creatures they have met? This dark fantasy includes drug use and strong language, but beneath its darkness readers find well-rendered characters, a gripping plot, and pure magic.-Tasha Saecker, Caestecker Public Library, Green Lake, WI Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

After reading the masterfully intriguing "Tithe", I rushed to my bookshelf to read this second installment of Holly Black's modern faerie series. At first, I admit, I was disappointed. I fell so in love with Roiben and Kaye, I just wanted to follow their story into the next phase. Alas, "Valiant" turns our attentions from a rural community full of the lush woodland faery courts...to the exiled urban grit of New York City. Driven away from their courts for a variety of reasons, the fey of New York City struggle against constant illness brought on by the iron that surrounds them. The only aid available to them comes by the hands of the crafty troll, Ravus. He seems to be as honourable as he is ugly but the fey drinking his potions have been dropping dead all over the city.... Val is a different kind of exile. When she is sickeningly betrayed, she exiles herself, running from all that is familiar until she befriends a motley crew of homeless youths that dwell in the underground train system. Val finds herself both terrified and fascinated by their lives and she is tempted to try the amber coloured drug that not only twists the users perception of reality....but the reality of everybody around them too. Val's life spins quickly out of control, only getting worse when she finds herself bound in the service of the frighteningly intense Ravus. But when he orders her to distribute his elixirs, and the dead bodies continue to be discovered, can Val even identify how much danger she is in? I thoroughly enjoyed the expansion of this wonderful fey universe. The urban environment was especially interesting, considering the weakness all of the fey have to iron and I think Holly Black handled the different environment so well that I could almost taste that metallic grit in the New York subway. As a warning, I found this story much, much darker than the original. This was largely because the heroine herself goes so far off the rails into this underground world of fey drugs. Even through the supernatural elements, the real story of youth homelessness and drug dependency is heavy and uncompromising. The story was very different from the first and enjoyable for different reasons. It was great to see some of the characters I loved reappear and I'm thoroughly looking forward to seeing where Holly Black takes us next in this universe.
