KEY LARGO: A hurricane swells outside, but it's nothing compared to the storm within the hotel at Key Largo. There, sadistic mobster Johnny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson) holes up--and holds at gunpoint hotel owner Nora Temple (Lauren Bacall), her invalid father-in-law (Lionel Barrymore) and ex-GI Frank McCloud (Humphrey Bogart).

McCloud's the one man capable of standing up against the belligerent Rocco. But the post-war world's realities may have taken all the fight out of him.

John Huston co-wrote and compellingly directs this film of Maxwell Anderson's 1939 play with a searing performance by Claire Trevor as Rocco's gold-hearted, boozy moll. In Huston's hands, it becomes a powerful, sweltering classic.

TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT: Help the Free French? Not world-weary Harry Morgan (Humphrey Bogart). But he changes his mind when a sultry siren named Marie asks, "Anybody got a match?" That red-hot match is Bogart and 19-year-old Lauren Bacall in her acting debut. Full of intrigue and racy banter (certain whistling instructions), this thriller excites further interest for what it has and has not.

Cannily directed by Howard Hawks and smarty written by William Faulkner and Jules Furthman, it doesn't have much similarity to Ernest Hemingway's novel. And it strongly resembles Casablanca: French resistance fighters, a bluesy piano man (Hoagy Carmichael) and a Martinique bar like Rick's Cafe Americaine. But foremost, it has Bogart and Bacall, carrying on with a passion that smoulders from the tips of their cigarettes clear through to their souls.

Synopsis

Key Largo: A hurricane swells outside, but it's nothing compared to the storm within the hotel at Key Largo. There, sadistic mobster Jonny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson) holes up--and holds at gunpoint hotel owner Nore Temple (Lauren Bacall), her invalid father in law (Lionel Barrymore) and ex-GI Frank McCloud (Humumphrey Bogart). To Have And Have Not: Harry Morgan and his alcoholic sidekick, Eddie, are based on the island of Martinique and crew a boat available for hire. However, since the second world war is happening around them business is not what it could be and after a customer who owes them a large sum fails to pay they are forced against their better judgement to violate their preferred neutrality and to take a job for the resistance transporting a fugitive on the run from the Nazis to Martinique. Through all this runs the stormy relationship between Morgan and Marie "Slim" Browning, a resistance sympathizer and the sassy singer in the club where Morgan spends most of his days.

This is a Lauren Bacall double DVD pack but you get a lot more than just her: you also get Humphrey Bogart, Edward G. Robinson, a Hemingway adaptation and some great dialogue in these two excellent films. I think "To Have and Have Not" just pips "Key Largo" as the better film of the two, but it's pretty cloase, they're both excellent.
