This gritty Northern period drama, set in Gallowshields on Tyneside between the World Wars, follows the struggles of former sergeant Jack Ford and the Seaton family as they deal with the aftermath of the Great War, the great depression of the 1920s, trade union activists and an uncaring society. In this series Jack Ford has been elected as the District Secretary for the Fitters Union and makes his brother-in-law Matt his deputy.
