Starting with his first seminal compilation, BELEZA TROPICAL, no one, apart from Stan Getz, has done as much to introduce Brazilian pop music to American listeners as ex-Talking Head David Byrne. Actually, the original BELEZA featured mainly the major figures of MPB (Musica Populaire Brasileiro), a movement that had already peaked by the early '80s. The new BELEZA 2 is an altogether more contemporary collection, gathering old and new artists alike, all of whom were active in the decade since BELEZA 1 was released.
There are the expected (and welcome) appearances from MPB giants Gilberto Gil and Caetano Velsoso. We also get a taste of the accessibly experimental Tom Ze, whose career Byrne has resurrected, and the legendary Chico Science, whose "Rios, Pontes & Overdrives" is an infectious example of Brazilian "rap." To make up for the male-heavy BELEZA 1, female artists such as Afro-Bahian Margareth Menezes, Marisa Monte, a liquid-voiced successor to the great Gal Costa, and "rock" powerhouse Daniela Mercury are each well represented by superior tracks. Even that old bossa nova hand, Sergio Mendes, gets a spot with yet another rap brasileiro called "What Is This," amusingly delivered in heavily accented English by its author, Carmen Alice.
