Performer Notes
  • Recorded in the late 50's and early 60's.
  • Personnel includes: Duke Ellington (leader, piano); Ray Nance (vocals, violin, trumpet); Milt Grayson (vocals); Harry Carney (clarinet, saxophone); Johnny Hodges (alto & tenor saxophones); Paul Gonsalves (tenor saxophone); Clark Terry, Shorty Baker, Mercer Ellington, Nat Adderley (trumpet); Jimmy Woode (bass); Sam Woodyard (drums).
  • Recorded between 1957 & 1968. Includes liner notes by Ian Whitcomb.
  • All tracks digitally remastered by Mercer Ellington.
  • These late-model versions of tried and tested Duke Ellington hits include updated arrangements of "The Mooche" and "In a Sentimental Mood," as well as a version of "Caravan" recorded during the band's early-1960s flirtation with Latin rhythms. There's a rare Ray Nance vocal on a loose "Take the 'A' Train," and the trumpeter is also heard on a nicely swinging "Just A-Sittin' and A-Rockin'." THE ELLINGTON LEGACY is a fine sampling of mature Ellingtonia, captured in both live and studio settings..
