Reviews

'It never ceases to amaze how the undead have enlivened the imaginations of writers, film/television makers and critics. The Lure of the Vampire is a particularly animated exploration of that creative engagement. By examining in a smart but always clear style not only a variety of vampire texts but the way fans have responded to those texts, Milly Williamson has produced a book worth the attention of the living.' David Lavery, co-editor of Slayage: The Online International Journal of Buffy Studies 'Elegantly and persuasively written, this book analyses the vampire from its classic incarnations to more contemporary forms. In moving beyond the textual dynamics of these highly complex texts, Williamson engages in fascinating work on audiences: reconstructing the possible interpretations of the different readerships for Bram Stoker's Dracula and engaging in current ethnographic research ... While Buffy has become a minor industry of academic writing, Williamson's work stands out as a genuinely serious engagement which has something to say beyond the bland and the predictable. In short, this is a terrific book: lively, persuasive and incisive.' Mark Jancovich, University of Nottingham
