About the Author

Ayodeji Olukoju is a Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. A multiple postdoctoral award winner, his main research interests are economic, social and maritime history. He is the author of Culture and Customs of Liberia (2006) and The ‘Liverpool’ of West Africa: The Dynamics and Impact of Maritime Trade in Lagos, 1900-1950 (2004). His most recent articles have appeared in Yoruba Studies Review (2017), African Economic History (2018) and Social Dynamics (2018). He served as Vice-Chancellor of Caleb University, Nigeria, from 2010 to 2016. Olutayo Adesina is a Professor of History and Director of the Centre for General Studies at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. His research interests include the economic, social and political history of Nigeria, African history, race relations, and regional integration. He has authored many articles in various academic journals, and co-edited a number of books, including Marginality and Crisis: Globalization and Identity in Contemporary Africa (with Akanmu G. Adebayo and Rasheed O. Olaniyi; 2010), Prince, Professor, Patriot: Oladele Adebayo Ajose (2015) and Nigeria in the Twentieth Century: History, Governance and Society (2017), among others.Abimbola Adesoji is a Professor of History at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria. His research interests are traditional and contemporary Yoruba history and the socio-political history of Nigeria. His most recent articles have appeared in Canadian Journal of African Studies (2014), Journal of Asian and African Studies (2017), African Identities (2017) and African Study Monographs (2017).Saheed Amusa is a Lecturer in the Department of History at Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria. His research focus is Nigeria’s social and political history since the colonial period. His articles have appeared in African Journal of AIDS Research, Journal of the Historical Society of Nigeria, and Health, Culture and Society, among others. He is a member of the Historical Society of Nigeria, the International Research Network on AIDS and Religion in Africa, and the International Society for Studies in Oral Traditions.
